Carl Milton Edwards
Carl Milton Edwards passed away peacefully in his 74th year at the Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre in Barrie on Sunday February 21st 2021.
A profound sadness enveloped the Elmvale and area sporting community when it learned of the unexpected, sudden death of one of its esteemed athletes, Carl Edwards. a talented hockey player and a superb fastball pitcher, Carl was instrumental in many Elmvale victories and team championships. His offensive contribution led the 1964-65 Alex Currie Juveniles to an undefeated season, culminating in a provincial championship. His stellar pitching resulted In the Elmvale Merchant Fastball Team capturing four consecutive Barrie and District Intermediate championships in the 1970's. In 1977 Carl's pitching dominance was a major factor in The Elmvale Merchant Fastball Team defeating Caledonia thus winning the Southern Ont. Intermediate ". C " championship, qualifying the team to travel to Hearst to meet the Northern Ontario winner. Against Caledonia Carl pitched all eighteen innings in the final sudden death game played in Etobicoke. Subsequent to this momentous pitching performance he notched two victories in Hearst to secure the O.A.S.A. Int."C" provincial championship for the Merchants. Both the 1964-65 Juvenile Hockey team and the 1977 Merchant fastball teams are inducted into the Springwater Sports Heritage Hall of Fame making Carl a double inductee. In addition to his prodigious athletic talent Carl was a respected and loved teammate. His humility, selflessness, dedication and respect for his teammates and others characterized his playing days. Though retired for some time his achievements as a renowned player on the ice and diamond remain prominent in the memory of the Elmvale sporting community
