George Allen Narrative

George Allen’s profound impact on local sports began in 1969 when he joined the executive of
the Elmvale Minor Hockey Association (EMHA). Over a decade of leadership as Secretary,
Treasurer, and President, George established a formal constitution and meticulous record-
keeping practices that anchored the growing organization. In the early 1970s, he recognized a
gap in playing opportunities for local youth who were not selected for the competitive Georgian
Bay League. Alongside Stan Janes, he co-founded the South Shore League, drastically expanding
local sports accessibility. His multi-sport coaching and organizational footprint eventually
extended to Elmvale Minor Ball, school fitness programs, track and field, cross country,
basketball, and the Senior Curling executive.
As a coach, George focused heavily on building physical stamina and strategic mental
toughness. He directed the rowdy but fiercely determined Moreau Farm Equipment Juveniles to
a legendary OMHA Provincial title in 1984. Just two years later, he guided the Hapamp
Construction Bantams to an OMHA "C" Division provincial crown, triumphing through a grueling
seven-game final series.
George's foresight routinely safeguarded the community's physical infrastructure. Months
before a devastating fire destroyed the local arena in 1974, George had prudently arranged for
updated insurance. This foresight provided the critical seed funding needed to rebuild. He co-
led a massive $50,000 community lottery, returning Elmvale to a reconstructed, debt-free
arena within just eight months. Two decades later, George co-chaired the committee tasked
with modernizing the facility, successfully securing vital government infrastructure grants to
bring a $2.1 million modernized arena to life. From 1998 onward, George spearheaded the
initial creation and subsequent 25-year maintenance of Heritage Park, seamlessly integrating a
pavilion, stage, and crucial trail connections to the Trans-Canada Trail system.
Beyond physical builds, George has been a dedicated custodian of Springwater’s heritage and
social fabric. He is the author of the foundational six-volume "Chapters" local history book
series, meticulously capturing the stories of the sports figures, builders, and community
heritage of the Elmvale area. In 2010, when the community faced the potential loss of its local
high school, George stepped up as co-chair of the Accommodation Review Committee (ARC),
successfully preventing the closure of Elmvale District High School (EDHS) and protecting the
