100 Years of Hockey History: Remembering Frank Foyston’s 1925 Stanley Cup Triumph
(Shared by Mike Townes, Authored by SSH)
As we look back on the storied career of SSH Inductee Frank Foyston, a remarkable milestone has recently been celebrated in the hockey world. March 30th marked the 100th anniversary of the Victoria Cougars’ historic Stanley Cup victory—the last time a non-NHL team hoisted Lord Stanley’s trophy.
A David vs. Goliath Victory
In 1925, the Victoria Cougars of the Western Canada Hockey League did what many thought impossible: they defeated the mighty Montreal Canadians 6-1 to clinch the best-of-five series.
While recent celebrations in Victoria highlighted the legendary goaltender Harry "Hap" Holmes, Springwater’s own Frank Foyston was an instrumental force on that championship roster. Foyston, a versatile and prolific forward, was part of the "vets" who brought veteran leadership and scoring prowess to the Cougars during their golden era.
From Victoria to Detroit
The 1925 victory remains a "last of its kind" moment in sports history. Following the Cougars' return to the finals in 1926, the league dissolved, and the roster was sold to a new NHL franchise in Detroit. In a nod to their championship pedigree, the Detroit team was originally named the Cougars before eventually becoming the Detroit Red Wings.
