Shirley Furlong was a remarkable builder whose vision and dedication forever transformed the Elmvale community and the sport of Figure Skating. Shirley became an Honourd Member of the Springwater Sports Heritage Hall of Fame in 2024. Her legacy is one of passion, perseverance, and profound impact.

In 1964, with the support of the Elmvale and District Lions Club, Shirley founded the Elmvale Figure Skating Club, giving local children the opportunity to learn the sport close to home at an affordable cost. Her organizational skills and tireless volunteerism brought the annual Elmvale Figure Skating Carnival to life, a cherished tradition that showcased the talent and joy of young skaters. Shirley’s efforts extended beyond figure skating. She also played a key role in reviving ladies’ softball in Elmvale in 1973, further enriching opportunities for women in sport.

Her commitment ensured that countless young skaters and hockey players developed the skills and confidence to thrive on the ice. Shirley’s hard work, creativity, and determination left an indelible mark on her community, inspiring generations. Above all, she was deeply appreciated for her kindness and generosity.

Shirley will be greatly missed but fondly remembered by all who benefited from her vision. Springwater Sports Heritage is proud and honoured to have Shirley as one of its members.
