Kathy McCarrol Anecdotes
- The 24/7 Coaching Reality: While standard sports coaching concludes when the final whistle blows, Special Olympics championship coaching requires full-time, 24/7 dedication. At major provincial, national, and world events, Kathy acted as a surrogate guardian, managing the physical, behavioural, and emotional wellness of up to five athletes at a time around the clock to ensure they were mentally prepared to step onto the podium.
- Building Winter Blueprints: Before 1991, specialized winter sports training for intellectually delayed athletes was exceptionally scarce in the immediate area. Seeing a clear void, Kathy utilized her technical connections to map out a dedicated Special Olympics Nordic Skiing infrastructure at Horseshoe Valley, a program that continues to act as a vital community hub for winter sports development.
