Dave Drinkill Narrative

The story of Dave Drinkill is the quintessential journey of a local farm boy whose relentless love for hockey propelled him from Elmvale’s community rinks to the absolute pinnacle of Canadian Amateur Hockey execution. Raised on his family farm near Elmvale by his parents, Rick and Janice, Dave spent his youth advancing through the Elmvale Minor Hockey system. A highly talented player on the ice, he reached his personal athletic peak in the crease, backstopping the legendary Elmvale Guardian Drugs Midgets team to consecutive OMHA Midget "C" Championships in 1999 and 2000.

Recognizing early on that his path to professional hockey lay not on the ice as a player but in the boardroom as an executive, Dave set out on a dedicated odyssey to run a major junior franchise. He paired his passion with formal education, enrolling in the gruelling four-year Sports Administration program at Laurentian University. While completing his studies, his work ethic shone through as he immediately volunteered for game-time operations with the Sudbury Wolves. This was followed by a gruelling five-month unpaid communication internship with the Hamilton Bulldogs of the AHL.

Returning home to Springwater, Dave knocked on the door of the Barrie Colts, offering to assist the team in any capacity. Between 2006 and 2015, his meteoric rise within the Colts organization saw him excel as a team analyst, a video coach, and eventually a highly respected Assistant General Manager for five seasons. His break came when he was named General Manager of the Saginaw Spirit franchise. Under Dave's management, the Spirit established a rich winning culture, resulting in the most wins in franchise history and its first-ever 50-win, 100-point season, culminating in a historic 2024 Memorial Cup Championship victory over the country's best teams. Dave's sharp eye for talent has led to drafting more than 20 players into the NHL, while his leadership earned him a prestigious selection to run Hockey Canada's U17 World Challenge teams, capturing both silver and gold medals. Despite his soaring success in international and major junior hockey circles, Dave remains a proud local son who regularly returns the physical rewards of his dream, including the Memorial Cup itself, to share celebrations with the Elmvale community that raised him.
