Tim Belcourt Highlights


1976
    ♦     Tim began his curling career at the age of fourteen with the Elmvale District High School Team.  Throughout his teens, Tim competed in men's leagues at the Club and County levels
1982
     ♦     Under the leadership of coach Bob Storey -Tim, Arnold McCauley, Brian Belcourt and Marty Ritchie entered the Ontario Jr. Provincial Playdowns.
     ♦      This junior team won at the zone and regional levels thus earning an entry into the provincial play-downs held in Kitchener, ON.  where they finished a respectable fourth against the best junior teams in Ontario
     ♦      Tim attended Georgian College in Barrie where he competed in curling with considerable success.  Curling on a mixed team, they were provincial finalists for the 1982 College Championships.  Georgian honoured Tim and another renowned student, Russ Howard, by instituting the "Belcourt/Howard" trophy given annually to the student athlete of the year at Georgian
1985
     ♦    Tim joined the Howard Team from Midland.
     ♦     Representing the Midland Curling Club, the Howard team partnered with the Keith William's team (Keith Williams, Ron Frankcom, Mark Goodwin and Denis Gignac) to wim the Governor Generals, a highly sought double rink provincial championship played in Oshawa, Ontario.
1986
     ♦     
The Howard Team won at the zone and regional level advancing to the Ontario Tankard Playdowns in Richmiond Hill, ON.  The Howard Team defeated the Wayne Tallon team from Ottawa to win the Ontario Provincial Championship and advance to the Brier playdowns in Kitchener, ON.
     ♦     At the Kitchener Brier their team finished tied for first with a 9--2 round robin record.  They defeated Barry McPhee from British Columbia in the semi final before losing 4--3 to Ed Luckowich of Alberta, thus finishing as Finalists.
     ♦    Participated in the T.S.N.`s Skins game in Thunder Bay, ON
     ♦    Won $32,000 in a Skin`s  Bonspiel competition played in Glasgow, Scotland.
1987
     ♦    
They qualified for the Ontario Provincial Tankard Playdowns through a Challenge Round.  They became provincial champions by defeating Ed Werenich in a final playoff game of the Ontario Tankard playdowns held in Trenton, ON.
     ♦    At the Edmonton Brier the Howard team finished first thus advanting to the finals where they defeated Bernie Sparks of British Columbia, thus achieving the pinnacle of success, namely Brier Winners and Canadian Champions.  As Brier Champions they now advanced to the next level-- The World Championship to be held in Vancouver.
     ♦     After finishing second in the round robin at the Worlds in Vancouver, Canada (Howard Team) defeated Denmark advancing to the final against the winner of Germany or Norway.  The Howard team defeated Roger Schmidt of Germany to win the World Championship.
     ♦   
The Howard team finished second in the T.S.N.  McCains Skins game played at Brandon Manitoba. They defeated Pat Ryan of Alberta in the semi final,`then lost to Werenich's Toronto squad.
     ♦   The  Howard team (Russ, Glenn, Tim and Kent) competed in the Calgary Olympic Trials.
     ♦     In recognition for winning the World championship in 1987 they were named Team of the Year for Ontario.
1986-87
     ♦     
The entire team was very active with instructing at the international level. In `86 they conducted clinics in Germany and Switzerland and in`87 they conducted numerous clinics in Japan (Kurizawa)
1988
    ♦    Qualified for the Provincial playdowns held in Ottawa.  Lost final game to Paul Savage of Toronto.
1989
   ♦     The Howard team qualified for the Ontarion Tankard Championship to be played in Chatham, ON.  After finishing in a tie for first with a 8--3 record, the Howard team defeated Ed Werenich in the final, thus earning the Ontario Championship for the third time in four years and advanced to the Brier playdowns in Saskatoon.  After finishing in a three way tie for first, they lost the semi final to Rick Folk from British Columbia.
1990
   ♦    They participated in the Moncton 100, a unique International Cash Bonspiel featuring sixteen teams from Canada and other countries.  The Howard team won $50,000, finishing second to Edmonton`s Ed Luchowich.  This bonspiel was noteworthy for two reasons-
-It was the richest bonspiel ever held in Canada
-It featured a new concept developed by Howard team in their practices.  The lead rocks could not be removed from play.  It is referred to as the Moncton Rule and eventually into the free guard zone that is presently used world wide.
1990
    ♦    Tim and Kent Carstairs leave the team.  Tim moves to the Skip position and competes in competitions representing The Elmvale Curling Club.
1990`s
   ♦    Elmvale teams skipped by Tim advanced through Tankard Zone 10 playdowns on three occasions. They won the competitive Midland/Penetang Major league several times.  This weekly competitive league featured ten teams that at various times featured six or seven past Brier or World champions.
1991.
    ♦    Tim and his teammates  Russ, Glenn and Kent, were inducted into the Canadian Curling Hall of Fame at the award`s ceremony held in Ottawa.
2001
    ♦    Tim, skipping the Elmvale team of Kevin Fleming, Larry Fleming and Paul Steele, won the Exmoor Curling Club`s annual Bonspiel played in Chicago, Illinois.
2009
    ♦    Tim`s team won the annual Elmvale Cash Speil featuring teams from various Ontario locations.
2014
    ♦    Tim is inducted into the Springwater Sports Heritage Hall of Fame (Athlete)
