Stanley Ritchie (athlete) Narrative

Article by Mike Towens

Stan Ritchie also played fastball but is known more for his hockey skills. Stan’s hockey career spanned five decades. He started at age 16 playing for Stayner and his outstanding defensive play earned him a tryout with the Toronto Marlies at 18. He starred with the Midland Red Wings winning an all-Ontario championship.

Stan’s best years were playing Senior “A” hockey for Collingwood from 1955-64.  His strong play earned him a tryout with New Haven of the International League, but a broken leg dashed that chance. After five years playing for Barrie, Stan returned to Elmvale to finish his career.

Both these men were gentlemen on and off the playing field. I congratulate them for their worthy inductions into the Springwater Sports Heritage Hall of Fame.
